Do you like history? I do. Bet you haven’t heard this one.

150 years ago, a man named Arnold McBride accidentally discovered the formula to chewing gum, while on an excavation in Finland. It was a mixture of chicle gum and whatever else you wanted to mix. He had over 1,000 patents. But he was a recluse. He often spent years at a time in total solitary confinement. He died without notice.

He had a son that he never knew about. But when he died he had no will. He was worth 2 million dollars, and he also left a book filled with amazing inventions. By law, the son was entitled to all of his father’s possessions. His son was a U.S. Marshal, who had the reputation of a mad-man, hell-bent on justice and law. When he inherited his father’s belongings, he retired to live in the mountains of West Virginia. He studied the journal, and began making chewing gum for the city, making even more money. He then became a recluse like his father. And the same damn thing happened over a few more grand kids.

I found out about this story from my grandfather. We were passing a historical marker on the side of the road, and I asked my grandfather what it said. He said, “That’s old McStride… the meanest, toughest gum slinger in the west.” I later found out that his grandchildren started the Stride gum company. They got the secret to lang lasting gum from the family recipe.
